From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 23 August 1894

My dear George

The delightful tel. came just after I had been reading a long pleasant letter from Maud, which shewed how well she had been keeping up—

I am glad it is a boy & I hope he will be as charming & good as his brother (Did you read Boy's letter to me, telling me about the Castor oil race with Pardor, in which Boy won, which was not strange as it wd be so easy for you to do a little cheating in his favour). I sent off the news to Bessy—

I hope there was no difficulty about the monthly nurse as Maud said she was not disengaged, but Helen wd be capital.

The Pattricks stayed 2 days & thanks to R & Hen enjoyed ev.thing & had a fine morning for Holwood— Ethel is v. pleasing but looks v. delicate   Harold wants a little polishing. Mr Pattrick & Camilla join them on Sep 3 at Cam— as he has not got a substitute & Louisa & Ludwig took them to the Grove—

The Leo's come today & the Horaces on Sat. so I shall see Gwenny's story.

Hen. is going today to see Lady Margaret Cecil & talk about the poor Osbornes, as she has promised to help them. R— went to see them in their little shop near Hounslow & found the poor blind man sitting behind the counter doing nothing. The Charity Org. has looked thoroughly into their circes & advised helping them to supply the shop & even made out a list of what is necessary   Hen. has £5 from Sir John & we shall easily manage that. Lady Margaret was at the flower show yesterday but was gone before the Litches were there— We had a lovely day for it.

Bessy has engaged rooms w. Miss Williams (at Maloja) for the 26th so that will be comf— & pleasant.

Your capital account to Hen. just come— It is so good it almost frightens me for fear Maud shd do too much in the first days of high spirits— I hope you & the nurse will be strict & not let her see the children except for a few

I dare say she feels up to anything & that all precautions are nonsense   my mother once made herself v. ill in like circes.

My best love to M.

yours my dear G— | E. Darwin

How lucky that Dr M. gave you such good directions you might have wandered for ever in the quiet town—

Hen. writes to Bessy & the Leos will be here–-
