From Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin 30 September [1895]

The Grove Cambridge

Sep 30—

My dear George

Every day has been just the same—heavy fog in the morning—brightening into a lovely day, rather too hot for me—- The children came on Sat & yesterday— Hen. went over w. them to read to the whole set at the Orchard. I went out & I am now just at my usual leve— Baby did not come. Horace & Ida go to Abinger today to pick up [G] & the [illeg] & go a driving tour that Effie has planned for them (She & Lord F are in Yorkshire)

They go by Salisbury & Winchester & arrive somehow at Marlboro', where they will stay Sat & Sunday to be within reach of Eras—who writes very comf letters wanting more money to furnish the study he shares w. young Barlow— Horace took him to Marl. last week & he was m pleased w. all he saw of the Dr & Masters &c.

Mr Dew behaves quite like a human being & condescends to be visible driving about w. Miss Lloyd, who is staying w Mrs Adams— Horace went to congrat him, & audaciously asked if he did not feel v. odd—wh he owned he did—

I wonder whether you have seen Truth & the attack on A. J. B.—about a Mr Brooks who makes a comf. living by writing begging letters & Unionist papers— Lords without number seem to have been taken in & have sent him money & A. J. B. (by Truths' account) allowed him £200— I hope A. J. B. will notice it somewhere; but it can't be a pleasant topic & be sure you tear up this letter— We have Acres of Zinnia & miles of Chrysanthems— Half the quantity wd do as well, but it is v. gay—

The trees seem to me many feet nearer the house— I am sleeping in the N. room & Hen roasting in mine

Bernard has taken to bicycling & learnt at once— I am glad of it I hope I shall see the Baby today

my best love to Maud yours dear G— | E Darwin
