From A. H. Haig to W. E. Darwin 3 August 1882

32 Randolph gardens, Kilburn, London.

Aug 3. 1882

Dear Sir

I have asked my publisher to forward the etching to you and I trust you will receive it safely. I have endeavoured to get it as near nature as my medium will admit; there is such a variety of colour about the original that at the first glance the likeness is black and white may not appear striking; but it will be truer than a photograph, where sometimes the light or bright colours will appear dark.

As regards the price I have thought a good deal about it and have come to the conclusion that each member of your family should be presented with a print and I beg you to believe that this will not place you under any obligation whatever to me. On the contrary I am obliged to you for having permitted me to do this work, which I believe will remunerate me sufficiently.

A dozen proofs or thereabouts according to the number of the members of your family will therefore be at your disposal. But family friends should scarcely be included, as no doubt your father had very many friends, and these I think ought to buy,— the publishers and I myself think that the work should be published at 3 guineas.

I trust I am not asking too much if I request you to refer any who should wish for impressions, and who are not members of your family to the publisher.

Mr R. Dunthorne

"The Cabinet of Fine art"

Vipo street. W.

I am, dar Sir, Yours faithfully | A. H. Haig

W. E. Darwin Esqr
