My dear Miss Galton,
Do you remember writing the enclosed letter some years ago? The part I wish to refer to is about the picture of a handsome young man, in a gold-laced coat in the possession of my uncle Erasmus. You see that you call it a picture of William Darwin father of Erasmus; but there is I think some mistake,—as all the pedigrees I have seen make Robert the father of Erasmus—thus
Now what I want to ask you is, how you know anything about the picture, & whether it is of Robert D. father of Erasmus or of Wm. D Uncle of Erasmus?
I am quite sure that if a label is not written on the picture as to where it came from & who it is, that no one will do it & it will pass irrecoverably from memory. I suspect the picture is of the Grandfather of Mrs. Fox—the man who acquired Elston by marriage
I shall be very much obliged for this information.
Cd. you also complete the followg Galton pedigree
The least troublesome way will be to return this letter to me?
Would you kindly return yr. old letter also.
You are so fond of pedigrees I'm sure you will forgive me troubling you, I hope you have quite recovered from yr. serious illness—
My father & Mother send their kind regards
Yours very sincerely | George Darwin
