From G. H. Darwin to W. E. Darwin 1 December [1885?]

Dear William

I'll leave you to judge about Ship Canal Mtge—certainly ordinary shareholders will get nothing. Yesterday Pember said to me that it had been shamefully mismanaged but that it wd someday pay [illeg] [illeg] the original shareholders.

I'm getting those letters typewritten.

Both Frank & I think it wd be better to let Smith & Elder alone as it is only one book & that not one with a very large sale. I assume of course that they are not now going 12 after having previously given 23.

The Master of Magd. has sent a copy of the entry of "William Darwyn son of William Darwyn of Lincolnshire Armiger 17 years old admitted pensioner from the endowed public school Ap. 3rd. 1672." This is the one who married Ann Waring— I can't interpret the last clause but will enquire.

Yours affec | GH Darwin
