From Emma Darwin to W. E. Darwin [c. 29 May 1859]

My dear William

You are rather a lazy boy not to have written but I dare say I shall have a letter from you tomorrow. Papa (& we also) have had the most enchanting weather & he has enjoyed it very much. Last night we were out late listening to the nightingales in the bright moonlight. There two answering each other. We had Lizzy T. & Mary P. Rose is a jewel of a girl she keeps them all happy & busy. Here is Papas letter but I doubt if you can read it as I cannot quite. Aunt Fanny went on Thursday. She entirely won Parslow's heart so that I was sure he wd find it quite possible to put her luggage on the phaeton & so it proved.

Yesterday we had a call from Mrs Carter & Alice & Mr Nightingale. Etty & I are to lunch there on Tuesday to meet the Nightingales but not Florence. Arthur has quite got over the scarlet fever but he is weak & has no appetite.

Goodbye my dear old man. I am rather headachy tho' I have been pretty free from it for some time.

Your affect. | E. D.

I suppose you feel pretty steady at work by this time.
