From Emma Darwin to W. E. Darwin [25 July 1889]

Down, Farnborough, Kent.

July 25 1889

My dear William

We have U. Hensleigh & Effie here— She is charming & we are v. comf— She & Bessy took a long walk yesterday to Cudham— She retains an affection for all the old places & remembers the time when she & you used to sit up in the old yew tree over the road at At Sara's & eat cherries.

Uncle H. seems verging towards staying in Q. Anne St, chiefly because it is such a trouble to move. Effie finds the house very dismal now. We have whist & plenty of singing— At last I perceive a change in Effie's voice; but she sings as beaut. as ever—

Hen. is m. troubled at the death of the gardener of K. Sqr. hydophobia, from the bite of a dog, not mad. She wd have sent him to Paris if there had been any fear—

She is coming to us next week en route to Kreuznach, where Dr Bright strongly advises her to go— It is v. tiresome for her, & a pity it was not decided earlier in the year, when it wd not be so hot— I am glad Miss Macre cd come to you— Will Lily visit her—

I hope you will have a good passage— my best love to Sara— yrs my dear Wm | E D– Thanks for the 10/-
