From Emma Darwin to W. E. Darwin 26 April [1890]

The Grove, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge.

Sat. Ap. 26

My dear William

I suppose you are settled at the Foley Arms, which according to my recollection is within easy distance of the hills— & the drives are also charming. Your visit at Gower St produced an impression some where, as it was announced that "the handsome Mr Darwin" had called— I am afraid this will produce some heart burning among the 4 plainer Mr Ds.

Snow is here & very pleasant. Her father was to be moved downstairs yesterday. They had a new Dr to see him w. Dr Cassidy— He said there was nothing the matter with his lungs & that there was no reason he shd not quite recover— I suppose Dr Cassidy discovered the spot in the lung for fun— They have not the least confidence in Dr C. & that takes away more than half the good of a Dr. We play whist w. Snow, & as she has never touched a card in her life until just lately, she gets on very well; but I shd have expected greater things from her excellent memory— I expect to hear of Hensleigh playing again. She is v. clever in finding pretty little bits to draw. She made quite a pretty drawing of the opening in the wall to the back regions & the bit of flower bed.

How flat & half-hearted the debates on the land bill are, esp. Parnell's speech— I think the App— must see how hopeless it is.

Dr Moore came 2 days ago to meet Mr Carver & take a look at me (they agreed that I was m. better). He had just been taking a tour in Ireland in cars. He always asked the driver who their M.P. was & not one of them knew— which looks as if Home Rule was not such a burning question.
