Dear George

I'm just back from Cambridge, and I have busted up the demonstratorship, I came to the conclusion that it would not do. Father was a good deal against it, & Balfour thought that it would be doubtful whether it would do, & in fact was against my going in for it, so I talked it over with Stuart, & put it all down to Father, & then he said that he would not think it worth while to try & make the university make me demonstrator unless I was going in for all he wanted wasQQQQ to become partner in the whole thing commercially, which I was dead against so we parted & the whole thing is bitched. I suppose it is best, but I do regret not coming up, & I also feel I might have done a little to have made the Engineering school a sucess, which as you know I should have liked very much. F.M.B. seemed well, & I had a very jolly time as usual. Dew & Falcher have got a new shop & will go into it at Easter. The great excitement in the College was that they had elected Jackson, Trotter & Blore, to represent the college before the commission. The Master coming out at the bottom of the poll. I don't think that there is anymore Cam. news. I'm going to stay here for a few days to finish up the sewage [skeeming] for the house everything is nearly finished. Balfour's job is going on all right, but the snow has delayed it. I expect I shall have to go down there soon

Yours ever| Horace Darwin
