From W. E. Darwin to H. E. Litchfield [7 November 1877]

Basset, | Southampton.

Wednesday

My dear Hen,

I found your card for me, it was very kind of you to send me one.

What an immense blessing you must feel it to have got Richard safely home, I was so very glad to see that you were none the worse, in fact I think you looked better than when I left you at Engelberg; it seems to me centuries since then.

There was such a rush at Down which prevented me, but I wanted to thank you with all my heart for all you have been to me these past 3 months, I am now as happy as a man can be and feel that my happiness for life ought to be safe. I am certain the more you see of Sara the more the sweetness of her character will gain on you  she has has passed through a horrid time of anxiety but her sister's coming has cheered her up wonderfully. Theodora says she has not seen her look so peaceful for years.

Our time is drawing very close and I shall be most thankful when it is past.

I intend running up to Cam. on Sat. morn. to see F. L.L.Dd. as I think it will be worth seeing, & back in the evening to dine at Simon's.

Goodnight dear Hen | my love to Richard  your affect W. E. D.
