From Emma Darwin to H. E. Darwin [28 July 1867]

Down

Sunday

My dear Hen

We succeeded in bringing home Anne yesterday & she had a good night & is all the better for it.

Dr Gill gave her permission on Friday, she was so set upon coming I think she wd have come in spite of him. I also succeeded in going to Ravensbourne & it was pleasant. Mr & Mrs de Tivoli being foreigners rather spoilt it. Aunt F. knows who they are. Lady Caroline & a Mr Henry some one in the neighbourhood but I did not discover who. A Miss SMith of Oxford & a Miss Ellen Martineau both pleasant Mrs Norman & Mary. I took the Lancashire wedding or Darwin moralized to read in the carriage. The moral is that it is not wise to give up a pretty, poor healthy girl you love & marry a sickly rich cross one you don't care for, which does not require a conjuror to tell one. The story ought to have been giving up a pretty sick girl you love & marrying a healthy one you don't care for. It is too dull to give to the Library. I am in hopes you have had weather quite fit to walk in. Yesterday it did not rain till night.

`(The Brad. was in Lizzy's Cloak. I hope I shall hear from some of you today. I have got `""Mr Hogarth's will & find it is all about Jane being an accountaint & that I found it too dull before. Papa will not stand Dr Austin's guests either, being about mad people, so we have only H. Dixon America & Old Jesse G. III which is comfortable enough.

Only think of the Fry's asking us to the wedding  I have accepted for the breakfast only; the rest wd be so very long. The breakfast is sure to be 2 hours.

It is foolish enough of them but I only mind for a new bonnet. My grey moirée will do. Which ever of you goes will be quite smart enough. There are separate invites for young & old. Have not you heard from Millicent yet? Send me her note. Susan & Joanna come on Thursday till Monday. I shall be very glad to have them.

Church was 14 too late last Sunday. Thank Lizzy for her note. (very well spelt) Papa wd be so much obliged if Hope wd Photo Effie with the distressed expression in eyebrows. Proofs all right. Papa has quite a sharp attack of Exema. Monday. Today yours of Saturday is come. I can't think how. The walks sound very charming. I think Frank might ask to stay till Friday as the Horners will com on Thursday here & we shall get our first flow over before he comes. Emily J. Is settled nicely  I don't know whether I won't ask Miss J. & Lizzy tho' our Lizzy won't be at home. John is to be married on Thursday & wants a wedding tour which is not quite convenient.

Rain, rain, but it has done very goodnaturedly in raining most at night.

Yours my dear—

I am sorry about Uncle H. I shall write to Lizzy next time

Papa is sending you some proofs today but the next batch is so bad you shall not have it till the revise  Your remarks were quite clear.
