From Emma Darwin to H. E. Darwin [winter 1870]

& I trust some good may be done yr letter just came. Poor C. L. I suppose it is doubts about future life troubles him too like G. Still I hope that w. his vivid love for Ed. & Mildred he forgets his harmful feeling when pretty well. I feel sure you will go & visit the Tollets if they live tho' one always feels that such a doubt—

I have written to Miss Latter & asked her to come here about P. F. I have got a lot of new music chiefly Schuberts & shd much enjoy it. F. is quite resigned about it. Lenny's vac. begins 20th but he believes they wd give him an add. week for going abroad. You had better settle yr coming home according to weather alone. It is complete winter still.

Eliz. went to Barlaston yesterday. I have been bothering her again about Miss P. & little Bertha, as Clem & Emily are strongly of opinion that she is not fond of the child, & that her passion for saving is so strong that it is impossible for her to be liberal eno' in food. I told her of the Lush's National Boarding School at Ockham for £18 a year every thing & the Miss L's look after them & see to their comfort.   The government really has such an easy time of it w. no opposition to any thing as one may say. I enjoy the Irish Coercion bill thoroughly. Lord Derby & Goschen &c seem most in earnest about pauperism
