From Emma Darwin to H. E. Litchfield [25 May 1876]

I am vexed at my letter not going yesterday, but not surprised as there was a paper put up in the hall ""post goes out at 6.30""—whereas it does go at 5.30— I thot of wiring, but as B. wd bring good news of us as far as Croydon, at least if she asked John I thought I might leave it.

F. & I rushed out to meet Leo. at 4 o 'clock & gave him a very flouting reception. However the real man did come about 6 driving w. 2 horses from Guildford, & not unreasonably tired. He minded the noise somewhat & went to lie down but came down to dinner & sat up all the evg. till 10 I believe, as F & I went off v. soon— It is delightful to see him this mg. sitting so comf at his knitting & I feel much more reassured about him— He has found Horace the best of secs & nurses. I sat $\frac{1}{2}$ an hour with Snow yesterday—

Poor soul I feel v. sorry for her. Effie's speech amused F & the boys– –not to say me— We must ask her in this evening— Nobody can be more obliging & anxious to make us comfortable

I have unearthed another room by your hint & we can take you in perfectly—& I think if you come in sealskin & our having the house warmed thoroughly there can be no risk of cold. The wind is N. today which I am sure is warmer for this house It w^d be most nice to have you & R. my dear. I was v. glad to see Andrew's note. I don't think you can take any steps about the cheque.

On coming we settled ourselves & arranged every thing in the best room w. is very nice; but after W^m's^ room viz At F's was q. ready we were filled with envy & resolved to change & by superhuman cleverness of Lenny in carrying in an impossible small bed we managed it just before W^m came— There is much more room & it is perfect for our purpose—

F. is very comf here. Snow has not appeared yet— Well Goodbye my dear. your being away is our only drawback—
