From Emma Darwin to H. E. Litchfield [24 September 1880?]

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Friday.

Dearest H—

Boscastle sounds v. charming; but I don't want Cornwall to turn out too charming as F. is in hopes we shall take him there next year & let him off the Lakes, & I don't believe it wd suit either him or me as well & the journey not much shorter.

Yesterday Bessy went to call on Miss Wendland (who [Galone] & while she was away Mrs Alexander & Miss D. called (she in a scarlet & white Foulard, which was most flaring; but suited her well). Mrs Alex. looks a good deal broken & could not speak about the wedding  Miss D. left affect. messages for F. Today the Union children come, only 30, so I shall not fash myself. I believe Dickson will be a great help to Bessy—also Jackson—& the day is going to be beautiful. (N. B. the garden still looks very gay)— I think the cocoa or Nux Vom. is suiting me & I have been m. more comf. The Godfreys come today down below—& will dine w. us tomorrow—

Fr. goes to the Shaens today & returns Monday when Bessy takes his place for the rest of the week—

I wish Cecil was not coming he will be a bore.

A letter from C.L. says he is better. A sentence in German about his wives entirely denying the young German governess; & saying that the one at 46 is too young; but I don't think that proves any thing. This last solitary illness makes me think differently about the folly of his marrying.

You have been v. good in writing— Mrs Hoole is r. better so I shall cast her off for a bit. She is so narrow that it is imposs. to like her at all— Yours my dear w. love to R— E.D—

Your acct Millicent gives one a happy impression
