From Emma Darwin to Leonard Darwin [19 October 1864]

Down

Wed.

My dear Lenny.

I wonder you don't go & see that pig it sounds wonderful. Last week Papa had an attack of sickness. We thought it was all over so I did not put off the Lyells & tho' he was a good deal knocked up by talking with them, he enjoyed seeing them & I thought it had done him no harm, but yesterday he had another bad attack of sickness.

Today he is downstairs & getting over it, but it is very disappointing. I will send you George's next, the last is gone, to Wm. He had put on his surplice for the first time & found it so stiff he had it washed. The Lyells staid from Saturday to Monday. I don't think those apples will be any better for waiting. They are Blenheim oranges. Hen. is going to send David to his long home which wrings her heart.

What is the difference between killing a man & pig sticking?

Do you give it up?

Because one is assault with intent to kill & the other is killing with intent to salt—

My love to old F. | yours E. D.

He will have to write to Lizzy some time
