From H. E. Litchfield to Emma Darwin [1874–8]

2 Bry. Street

What a lovely day! I I feel quite a grudge we aren't coming to Down *P ⟨symbol for tomorrow⟩ *Q— I've enjoyed my days tho', [much—Supha] took me a drive in her luxurious carriage & I made up my mind that a carriage in London is v v. nice thing— I wish you'd tell [Supha] how m I liked it, as I didn't thank her enough for thinking of it— Tell her also I've took her a tick for Jo wh. shall appear at Bry Sq in due course. I do hope you'll have a [ni] Sunday for them & that Geo will be well—

I wish somebody wd dig me up some primrose roots & you'd sent 'em up in a little hamper with some moss— Geo perhaps wd bring them. I shd like them so much, & tho' I can buy them they are not nice ones. If I can I'll send you some Double daises in return [but] they are too dear yet.

Poor old R. doesn't get on at all fast, but he is I suppose healing—but it still looks a large red wound [with] little centres of matter.

He can manage office life quite well & it doesn't give him any pain. I sometimes wonder whether old Butt has managed it well  He is extremely surprised at it, but doesn't seem to know what to do differently. I thk if it doesn't get well soon R. had better go & see Morant Baker. It is 16 days since it happened.

Little E.M.T. came to lunch today & was v. nice, not injured at not having seen me, or grasping as to when to see me again. If she did not know it is so m. the best policy.

I got up to breakfast this morning without any difficulty—& didn't feel tired afterwards. This lovely weather seems to heal one & invigorate one so. I think the end of Harbour Bar very stupid—anybody can kill a whole boat load & what good is there in it. I've been reading a good bit of my Godwin.

Goodbye dear M. | Your | H.E.L
