From G. H. Darwin to M. H. Darwin 21 September 1885

Mon dear pretty Lassie,

You really know the most of my history up to now, but you must have yr letter for all that.

I got a modicum of sleep & had the car all to myself after two o'clock. I had to turn out at 6.30 however just When I was sound asleep & so went 12 hr at Kilmarnock. Then I got some stuff sold under the name of coffee & some bread–butter uneatable. Then we we went on for two hours at the rate of 10 miles the hour or so until I got here.

Sir W. & Lady T. were as cordial as ever in their welcome— There is a sort of little electrical congress going on— but nearly all of them go today. Stokes, Glugelrooke, Lodge (tall man in dirty flannels we saw that hot night at Phila at the electrical concert), Fitzgerald & Gordon & Forbes. These are mostly nothing but names for you & for me too for the matter of that. I have had some brekafast & a bath & am better. All the men have gone out bathing, but I thought I shd be too tired & besides it is very cold. Lady T. & are alone in the house. I find the T's will come to Cambridge about Oct 28 & so we must be prepared for them. I have really nothing more to tell— oh yes the Ragleights & Lady T's brother & his wife come tonight.

Be sure you tell me all about yourself first— then about Gwen & then about the great affair & everything else that happens I thought about you all night when I was awake but also spared some thoughts for the great affair. When one says of Dew that he is the man of all the world who will do more for his friends & will make least of it, I think that one has given almost the highest praise that can be given. I can't help seeing however that he is a man very much set in his own ways & with very distinct ideas of his own on all points Ella can see this quite as well as I can so I don't know that it they are repeating it to her, & I think she knows that I have an unbounded confidence in him. Well the matter is in their hands & I ferverently hope it will turn out as we hope

Ever your loving | scrumatick Bubbuns

I believe I had best not meddle pro or con they must judge for themselves Elen knows I esteem him highly & she can judge of his ["greediness"] herself. Dont you think that best
