From J. Bonham Carter to Horace Darwin 17 August [1873]

Trinity College

August 17th.

My dear Horace

Mrs. Lever says you are really coming up here again & want to knowwhat day term begins; so as I wished to write to you I promised to answer your question, & to tell you that it is October 13th. I am very glad to hear of this result of your final determination & hope that it will prove to be your best course; are you thinking of going in for your tripos in the ordinary way & then grinding nat: science, or are you going to give up the idea of taking your degree altogether?

Mrs. Lever gives me your address at Southampton: how come you to be there? I thought you had settled to join the workshops of the London University for the time being.

I have now been up here without more than a day or two away since the 2nd. July, so you may imagine that I am pretty well tired of it: however I have done a good deal of work, and have not found it unbearably slow, so that I do not feel I have made a mistake in coming up: I go down on the 27th. or 30th. as far as I know at present.

There are a huge number of men still up, 150 I should think, and most of the men I know, so that it is not unlike ordinary term.

They are hard at work guilding & painting the chapel, & now have week day services at St. Michael's; Moule has lately been rather officious, but whether he will complain of my absence under the above circumstances, remains to be seen.

Let me have a line someday when you have a moment to spare, & believe me yrs truly | J Bonham Carter
