From Emma Darwin to Horace Darwin [14 October 1872]

Sevenoaks

Monday

My dear Horace

At last we had a fine day yesterday & had 2 nice walks in the park— We enjoy our key, indeed without it I shd hardly get into the park at all— We have had some sun I must own every mg, but it has been cold & windy & rained every P.M. Frank came down on Sat. with young Hodgson & went to lunch with them at Ash Grove, which he thought a lovely place about 12 a mile off on the Common. It was pleasant & after luncheon he & young Hodgson & a young Norfolk Gurney, went a long walk in the Park. They seem v. rich people & have beautiful pictures & statues.

Geo. came down full of hopes that a Turkish bath which he has taken twice wd do him great good; but he seemed quite as poorly as ever yesterday. (N.B. I sent you your pamphlet)—

Today we expect the Litches for 3 nights & I hope it will be fine for some expeditions not that I shall go any further than a mile or so—

Goodbye my dear Old man. I hope you are feeling brisk again—

Frank has seen Butler again who seems more candid than ever about his family.

yours E. D
