From Emma Darwin to Ida Darwin [22 August 1883]

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Wed—

Dearest Ida or Horace

I have not yet left off rejoicing at its being over & a little girl; though I remember the discomforts used come after the first few days. Rasemouski is at this moment running up & down his favorite hill & Grace sitting by with her knitting. Bernard having a game of cricket with Cecil & Minnie Dickson in the field— The poor boy is much happier now, as he is to go back to the training ship, & when he leaves, it will be with a number of his companions, who will stick by each other—

Rasmus looks quite charming in his red cocked hat— I don't see that he says any thing more but “Uncle;” & “Orpington” is reported; but I doubt that.

At Caroline is wonderfully well & has sat out 4 hrs each day— Mary Hancock is much liked by every body. We have had 2 very hot oppressive days, wh. must have been bad for you I am sure— Today is a N. wind & perfect—

Yours my two dear children E.D—

I think Surman has a situation; as I know Miss Astley wanted him & could not get him—

Thanks for address.

Rejoiced at your good acct of yesterday—

So Mr Farrer is to be Bart— I am very glad: when it is given for good work it must please him & Effie & Tom too I hope—
