From Leonard Darwin to G. H. Darwin [July 1879?]

Thursday

Dear G.

Herewith Col. Chesters letter. I think as we have gone so far we had better go on. It will be about £10 each; at least I suppose the others will help. I think we had better not tell father or mother what it costs. If you think it too much which I dont, we must put off the consideration of it till next week as I am off to the Lakes tonight till Monday night   Consequently I am in rather a hurry today. Does he mean that £50 is the total expense? if so why does he say “if successful”. We must be clear on that point, because I think that is about all we should be inclined to pay. I advise you to run down and see him. It is a very handy place to get at.

I am much interested about the ancestor. We shall have to ask in “Notes and Queries” what “Steward & the Perevel” is

If you think we are to go on, read the enclosed letter and either take it with you to Col Ch, or send it with you [unclosure], or if you think it not to the point, send your information to him, or call upon him and say that I shall be away for a short while and will write later; in this case burn the cheque. Keep his letter safe. The question is must we pay in advance? I suppose a retaining fee means payment in advance
