From H. E. Litchfield to Horace Darwin 24 April 1873

Dear Jemmy

The pots have come all safe but one jug which Ellen & I have just mended & tied up with string. I think they are quite charming & I only wish you had bought a few tons more.

I'll take care of them till you come & we divide the spoils. The yellow is simply divine—I'll tell you one thing I wish youd bought that copy of the shield of achilles or minerva or some such person. I saw it yesterday at our dear upholsterers who has just had a cargo of Vallauris pots which he admires exceedingly— I darent ask him prices cos it would make me afraid of buying his other pots if I found out what percentage he charged & you can get such nice pots there.

I hope Cant. is pretty nice  If it is like London it is very cold— Snow today!

Our meeting was a great success. You cant think what a nice little speech Crawley made. I think he has one one of the most charming faces I ever saw— & Emerson's speech was a great hit. R. said his little talk very nicely— He only does one funny thing—very often shuts his eyes  I'm so used to seeing him w. his eyes shut it doesn't seem to me any thing but normal but I think it must have an odd effect. Now I hope I'm not maligning him—after saying all this I believe it is n't true—

Isn't it fine about H. £2100!

Ever yours | H.E.L.
