From Rose Wedgwood to Horace Darwin 20 August 1873

Barlaston, | Stone, Staffordshire.

Aug 20th. 1873

Dear Horace

Leonard tells us there is to be a battle in Shugborough Park which will be rather a show battle on the 1st. of September   Wont you change your mind & come in time for it; it seems almost a pity to miss it by one day doesnt it? and I hope we shall be able to go & see it: we mean to if we can manage it.

So we hope you will settle to come on Saturday the 30th. instead of Tuesday the 2d. if that falls in with your plans and if you would like to see the battle.

I have been trying to write to you for two days but have failed hitherto   If it is fine tomorrow we are going over to see the camps and have tea with Leonard which will be great fun. I have never seen a camp   I am so glad to learn your sentiments about soldiers for they quite agree with mine; they are very lovely.

Last Saturday Leonard came over & we were such a delightfully big party. we hardly expected him he had thought it so unlikely he could get leave; still we hoped he might prevail over the old trots of generals so we were very glad to see him turn up.

Your affecate. cousin | Rose Wedgwood
