From Horace Darwin to G. H. Darwin [April 1875]

[DIAG HERE] Just sent off my other letter thought of a much better plan There are 3 string from wheel going over 3 pulles these strings all go down under the big cylindr and are fasten to the ends of 3 radial, equal rods ao bo co, (drawn in perspective in my picture) forming a rigid frame in a horizontal plane, from the centre and at rt [angle]s to this plane is fixed another rod oD hanging vertically down-wards (when cylinder is straight) with scale pan at its end. If the cylinder moves sideways there will be a greater tention on the string coming from the side from wh it moves so it will pul it back again. * It must act   I’m excited about it

* because rod oD will be pulled out) of the vertical)
