From W. E. Darwin to Horace Darwin 30 September [1874?]

My dear Jim

I wrote you a card in train & posted it here at 2.45 and then found this spot was so despised that the post went out at the vile hour of 2.30. This is a charming place & I had a capital walk yesterday with the finest views I have seen yet. Today I driven indoors by the equinox and out of doors by a smokey chimney. As I cannot make an expedition I am running to Carlisle to see the Cathedral. My cold is gone & my throat very much better in fact nearly right. This is a jolly little inn (barring a smoky chimney) & I have it to myself. I hope the “Red Tie” turns out to be a good sort.

I daresay we shall meet at Down on Sunday.

I enjoyed our 10 days extremely & wished they had not come to an end.

Goodbye dear Jim | Your affect | WED
