To Eduard Strasburger   9 December [1876]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Dec. 9th—

My dear Sir

I am very much obliged to you for kindly sending me your new book. The amount of work, & work of extreme difficulty as is obvious from the Plates alone, which you effect is truly astonishing.2

With much respect | yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

The year is established by the publication date of Strasburger 1876b.
The second edition of Strasburger’s Über Zellbildung und Zelltheilung (On cell formation and cell division; Strasburger 1876b) contained eight pages of plates. CD’s copy is in the Darwin Library–Down. Strasburger sent the French translation of the first edition (Strasburger 1876a) earlier in the year; see letter to E. A. Strasburger, 9 March 1876.
