To G. G. Stokes   22 December 1875

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Dec 22 1875

My dear Sir

I am much obliged to you for so kindly writing to me.1 I am curious to hear about the feathers, but I am in no hurry. I will therefore wait & see whether Mr Sorby’s paper appears;2 if not, I will write to him—

With many thanks | yours sincerely | Charles Darwin

Stokes had told CD that Henry Clifton Sorby had determined the cause of the play of colours in the feathers of peacocks and humming-birds (see letter from G. G. Stokes, 20 December 1875).
