18 April 1876

Charles Darwin Esq: | Down

My dear Sir

From your much valued letter of 14th.1 I see that I may write fully.

Yesterday being “Easter” I could get nothing done. Today, pursuant to my telegram, I send you by Globe Parcels Express the plants and tubers. I find I must quit.2

Tomorrow I hope to write, with profound respect, faithfully yours | James Torbitt

P.S. | 3 Boxes Carriage paid thro’.

In 1876, 17 April was Easter Monday. Globe Parcel Express transmitted small parcels and packages daily between major towns in Britain and around the world through a network of agents. They were significantly cheaper than the Post Office between large centres (Pall Mall Gazette, 1 August 1883, p. 11, and for an 1863 Dublin advertisement, see catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000537717 (accessed 8 September 2015)).
