April 20th

Dear Sir

Prof. Victor Carus wishes to translate into German my volume on “Volcanic Islands” & that on “S. America”. He says that he cannot procure a copy; but I remember you telling me about a year ago, that you had plenty of copies.— Will you be so kind as to inform me whether you have a copy of each so that I may inform Herr. Koch, the publisher.—2

Begging that you will excuse my troubling you I remain | Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. V. Carus, 16 April 1876.
See letter from J. V. Carus, 16 April 1876. Volcanic islands and South America, parts of CD’s geological observations on the Beagle voyage, were published by Smith, Elder & Co. in 1844 and 1846 respectively. Eduard Koch was head of CD’s German publisher, E. Schweizerbart’sche Verlagsbuchhandlung.
