To John Lubbock   16 August [1876]1

Aug 16th

My dear Sir John—

Your speech appears to all of us quite excellent—admirable—& I am very glad indeed to have heard it read aloud.—2 I send the Todas, which please keep, as long as you like, but let me have back some time.3

yours &c | C. Darwin

The year is established by the reference to Lubbock’s speech (see n. 2, below).
Lubbock had given a speech to the House of Commons at the second reading of the Cruelty to Animals Bill on 9 August 1876 (Hansard parliamentary debates 3d ser. vol. 231 (1876), cols 886–931).
CD sent A phrenologist amongst the Todas, or, the study of a primitive tribe in South India (W. E. Marshall 1873); CD’s annotated copy is in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 566–7).
