To J. D. Hooker   [18 August 1847]

[Down]

Wednesday

My dear H

Your note just received.— I hope assuredly to come on Friday & return on Saturday.1 My stomach is extra well, & as I have had an extra long bad batch, I have little fears of failing.— I will come in my phaeton, as otherwise I find I shd have to change conveyance 5 times!!—2 I am very glad you have been so happy: it is a noble family to be allied to.

Yours | C. D.

I will arrive about midday.— so you will have your mornings work.—

The visit took place on 20–1 August.
CD’s route would have involved going from Down to Croydon, taking a train to London Bridge, then a cab to Nine Elms, thence by train to Richmond, and finally by cab to Kew.
