Oct. 25th

My dear Sir

I shall feel extremely happy to promote in the smallest degree any object in which you are interested, & therefore will you be so good as to put my name down to the Subscription List for £1’0’0 for the Portrait of the Bishop.1

I beg to remain | dear Sir | Your’s sincerely | C. Darwin

G. Ransome Esqe

CD subscribed £1 1s. on 2 January 1850 (Account Book, Down House MS) for a portrait of the Bishop of Norwich. This was probably one of the portraits in the Ipswich Museum series promoted by Ransome. There are two bishops of Norwich in the set: Edward Stanley, who had died in September 1849, and the recently appointed Samuel Hinds. See also letter to J. S. Henslow, [7 October 1849], n. 4.
