Down Farnborough Kent

Dec. 19th

Dear Sir

I am much obliged for your note of the 16th. The Ray Socy. has already given me 22 copies,1 so I have no cause to complain. Should you hear of any copy on sale will you be so kind as to immediately inform me of the Price.—2

Yours very sincerely | C. Darwin

See letter to Edwin Lankester, 30 January [1852]. In that letter only twenty presentation copies were mentioned. CD’s list of presentation copies also indicates that twenty copies were available (MS attached to CD’s copy of Living Cirripedia (1854) in the Cambridge University Library). The twenty-two copies referred to here may include those due to CD as a subscriber to the Ray Society.
Ray Society publications were sold by subscription and not through booksellers. A list of subscribers was usually bound into the backs of Ray Society volumes.
