From John Cattell   13 August 1855

Nursery & Seed Establishment, | Westerham

Aug 13th— 1855

Dear Sir,

In answer to your enquiries respecting the German Seeds1 I beg to say I import my own direct and I find the quality so superior to what I used to get from the wholesale dealers in London that every year I find a very great increase in the demand. The best quality I have ever got has been from Messrs. C. Platz & Son, Erfurt, Prussia Frederick Adolphus Haage Junr. also of Erfurt is a good grower of them and also Charles Appelius of the same place. G. H. Behn of Hamburgh also grows them good and extensively.

I am | Sir | Your most obedt Sert— | John Cattell C. Darwin Esqr

Cattell’s catalogue of floricultural seeds advertised German seeds. CD’s copy of the 1855 catalogue is heavily marked for those he intended to order (DAR 46.2: 2). See letter to J. D. Hooker, 14 [August 1855].
