I write one line to say that I have this morning received safely your most kind present of Hewson’s work.1 I have just looked at the Table, & am astounded at the number of the measurements.2

In his letter to Gulliver of 18 December [1855] (Correspondence vol. 5), CD had accepted Gulliver’s offer of The works of William Hewson (Gulliver ed. 1846). CD’s annotated copy is in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 378).

Gulliver had tabulated comparative measurements of red blood cells of various species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish for his edition of the works of the physiologist William Hewson (Gulliver ed. 1846, pp. 237–44). CD was interested in obtaining measurements of corpuscles of pigeons and dogs (see Correspondence vol. 5, letter to George Gulliver, 18 December [1855]; see also Correspondence vol. 6, letter from George Gulliver, 20 January [1856]).
