Down Bromley Kent

Feb. 21st.

My dear Sir

On going to London last week I found there lying for me the two first Parts of your great work, the Contributions &c &c.—2 I thank you most truly for this magnificent present; & feel much flattered & gratified by this mark of your esteem.— I have eagerly turned over the pages & plainly see that there will be much of the highest interest to me.—

With my cordial thanks for your kindness | I beg leave to remain | My dear Sir | Yours sincerely obliged | Ch. Darwin

The year is given by the reference to a trip to London. CD was in London from 16 to 20 February 1858 (letter to W. E. Darwin, 11 [February 1858]).
The first volume of Agassiz 1857–62. CD’s annotated copy of the volume is in the Darwin Library–CUL. For CD’s comments on it, see letter to Asa Gray, 4 April [1858].
