To J. D. Hooker   16 May [1858]

Down Bromley Kent

May 16th

My dear Hooker

Will you give me a meeting at Thatched House Tavern on Thursday at 5o oclock, as I want very much to ask you one or two questions.—1 I hope this will not be inconvenient to you.—

If I do not hear I will be there at 5o oclock.— I presume you will have done the horrid job of considering my M.S.—2 I am in no sort of hurry, more especially as I know full well you will be dreadfully severe.—

Ever yours | C. Darwin

The Philosophical Club of the Royal Society met for dinner at the Thatched House Tavern, St James’s, before meetings of the Royal Society in nearby Burlington House. CD attended the meeting held on Thursday, 20 May 1858 (Philosophical Club minutes, Royal Society).
CD refers to the manuscript on large and small genera (DAR 15.1) that he had sent to Hooker for his comments (see letter to J. D. Hooker, 6 May [1858]).
