To George Rolleston   1 June [1860]1

Down Bromley Kent

June 1st

– Mr Darwin presents his compliments to Dr. Rolleston & is extremely much

obliged for his very kind invitation,2 which he would have had very great pleasure in accepting, had not the state of his health, rendered it almost necessary for Mr Darwin to have private lodgings so as to avoid fatigue.—

Dated by the relationship to the letter to J. D. Hooker, 30 May [1860], in which CD states that he has written to inquire about rooms at Oxford (see n. 2, below).
Rolleston was professor of anatomy and physiology at Oxford University and president of the sub-section on physiology at the forthcoming meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Oxford.
