My dear Huxley

It is late at night & I have this minute finished your Address to Geolog. Socy. & I must just thank you for sending it me.—2 I have read it with uncommon interest. It is a wonderful condensed & original summary on Palæontology, & I should think & hope will do much good.— I hope you are not killing yourself with too much work—

The year is established by the reference to Huxley’s anniversary address to the Geological Society of London (see n. 2, below).

In the absence of the president, Huxley, as one of the secretaries of the Geological Society, delivered the anniversary address on 21 February 1862 (T. H. Huxley 1862d). The president, Leonard Horner, was in Italy with his convalescent wife.
