⁠⟨⁠Hoch⁠⟩⁠verehrter Herr!

Sie werden ohne Zweifel längst erwartet haben über das ⁠⟨⁠For⁠⟩⁠tschreiten der beiden Uebersetzungen Kenntniss zu erhalten;2 ⁠⟨⁠d⁠⟩⁠er Druck verzögerte sich gegen Erwarten, aber jedenfalls sollen auch die beiden anderen Lieferungen des “Origin” binnen etwa 5 Wochen ausgegeben werden.3

Indem ich nun anliegend die beiden Schriften

ueber die Entstehung der Arten,

ueber die Einrichtung zur Befruchtung der Orchideen

in je 3 Exemplaren Ihnen sende, hoffe ich durch die Ausführung Ihre Zufriedenheit zu erhalten. Sollten Sie noch weitere Ex. davon wünschen, so bitte mir es zu sagen.4

Ich füge der heutigen Sendung ein neues Werk bei: Die Pflanzenblätter in Natur Druck (Morphologie d. Blätter) von Reuss, 1e Lieferung.5 das Ganze soll 42 Blätter umfassen; ich glaube dass Sie Interesse daran finden und würde mich freuen, wenn Sie das engl. Publikum bei Gelegenheit darauf aufmerksam machen könnten.

Neulich erzählte mir Jemand einen Fall, der Sie interessieren wird; ein Mädchen wurde Schwanger und beschuldigte einen jungen Mann der Vaterschaft, dieser bestritt solches, fügte aber bei, wenn das Kind an Hand und Fuss je 10 finger, Zehen habe, wie er, so wolle er der Vater seyn; als das Kind geboren war, zeigte es an Händen u. Füssen je 10 Glieder mehr oder weniger entwickelt!

Highly honoured Sir,

No doubt you have long been expecting to hear word of the progress of the two translations;2 contrary to expectations the printing has been held up, but in any case the two other installments of the Origin will be out within about 5 weeks.3

In sending you the three enclosed copies of both works

über die Entstehung der Arten, über die Einrichtung zur Befruchtung der Orchideen

I hope that their production will meet with your approval. Should you want additional copies, please let me know.4

I am adding to today’s shipment a new work: Die Pflanzenblätter in Natur Druck (Morphologie d. Blätter) by Reuss, 1st installment.5 The whole work will comprise 42 folios; I think that you will find it interesting and I would be pleased if you could at your convenience bring it to the attention of the English public.

Recently I was told of a case that you might find interesting; a girl became pregnant and accused a young man of being the father; he denied the accusation but added that he was prepared to be the father provided that the child had ten fingers and toes on each hand and foot as he had. When the child was born, it had on each hand and foot ten digits, more or less developed.
