To George Robert Waterhouse   [August 1838–40]

My dear Waterhouse

I am so determined to make you a geologist, that I have taken the liberty of sending you a copy of Lyell,1 by which means I obtain full right to mal-treat & abuse you till you have read it.

Ever yours | C. Darwin

The reference is either to Lyell’s Elements, which was published in August 1838 (see letter to Charles Lyell, 9 August [1838]), or to the sixth edition of the Principles, published in 1840.
