From Emma Darwin to Alphonse de Candolle   17 December [1863]

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Dec 17.

Dear Sir

Mr Darwin wishes me to write for him as he is too unwell to be able to write himself. He begs me to thank you for your letter & very kind present of the pamphlet.1 I am sorry to say that he has been very unwell for 3 months & though he is making slow progress I am afraid it will be long before he can apply himself to his usual pursuits.

I am with his kind remembrances | yours very truly | Emma Darwin

The reference has not been identified; the pamphlet may have related to CD’s inquiry about Lythrum (see letter to Alphonse de Candolle, 4 August [1863]).
