My dear Darwin

We hope to leave for Ireland on Friday or Saturday, & spend a week or two in Wicklow with Dr & Mrs Harvey—1 I must be back by the 21st. for examinations at the London University.2 I shall have to see some Gardens at Dublin & shall remember you if I see any thing scandent that can be of use. I am very much annoyed at having to leave home now matters are in such confusion in the Garden but it is now or never with me & I am wearied out. As ill-luck will have it our new Curator is far from well, & the workmen &c take great advantage of all such contretemps.3

Ever yr affec | J D Hooker

Hooker and his wife, Frances Harriet, took a holiday with William Henry Harvey and his wife, Elizabeth Lecky, in County Wicklow, Ireland (see letter from J. D. Hooker, 5 July 1864).
Hooker was an examiner at London University (L. Huxley ed. 1918, 1: 537).
The reference is to John Smith (1821–88). On the recent difficulties at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, see the letter from J. D. Hooker, [4 June 1864].
