From E. A. Darwin   1 December 1864

1 Dec. 64

Dear Charles

I have heard from Mr Salt1 about the affairs of the late Edd Evans,2 for whom we are Trustees.

The property is to be divided into nine shares & distributed except one share belonging to an infant which we shall still hold (Consols)   The whole amount is under £500. I suppose I had better tell him to act as he thinks best.

I have got your medal from Mr Busk—3 it is rather ugly to look at, & too light to turn into candlesticks

Yours affec, | E D

The reference is to Thomas Salt of the Shrewsbury law firm of Salt and Sons (Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire, with Bath, Bristol, Herefordshire, and Shropshire 1863).
Edward Evans had worked as a butler for CD’s father, Robert Waring Darwin, at The Mount, Shrewsbury (Census returns 1841; see also Correspondence vol. 2, letter to Syms Covington, 7 October 1843 and n. 2, and Brent 1981, p. 18). He died in 1846 (Shrewsbury Chronicle, 13 November 1846, p. 3; see also Correspondence vol. 4, letter to Syms Covington, 30 March 1849). The details pertaining to the Evans estate have not been found.
The references are to the Copley Medal and George Busk (see preceding letter).
