My dear Sir/

You may have heard through our excellent friend Dr. Hooker1 that I am about to assume the Editorship of the Gardeners’ Chronicle with a staff of practical men as colleagues.2

I hope we may continue to be favored from time to time with notices enquiries and what not from your pen and I shall be greatly obliged for any hints or suggestions for the improvement of the paper and the extension of its utility that you may have to make.3 Dr. Hooker has promised me his support and I am very anxious to secure an influential class of contributors and correspondents—

Pray excuse me for troubling you and believe me | faithfully yrs | Maxwell. T. Masters

In an earlier letter to CD, Masters had mentioned that he would assume the position of editor of the Gardeners’ Chronicle in a few months’ time (see letter from M. T. Masters, 12 July 1865 and n. 6).
CD often sent letters to the Gardeners’ Chronicle (see letter from M. T. Masters, 12 July 1865 and n. 7).
