The date is established by the references to Hooker’s manuscript (see n. 2, below) and by the relationship between this letter and the letter to J. D. Hooker, 12 August [1866]. In 1866, the Friday following 12 August was 17 August.
Hooker refers to the manuscript of his lecture on insular floras (J. D. Hooker 1866a), delivered at the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science on 27 August 1866.
