From R. M. Rolfe   20 November 1867

40 Upper Brook St

20 Nov 1867

My dear Mr Darwin

I send you my Cheque for the Downe Charities of which you are so good as to be the Guardian—1

I suppose this is the proper time for the payment, inasmuch as I have just received the enclosed unsigned receipt but you will know how to deal with the matter properly2

Yours very truly | Cranworth

Rolfe was a regular subscriber to the Down Friendly Club and the Down Coal and Clothing Club, of which CD was treasurer (Freeman 1978; see also Correspondence vol. 14, letter from Harriet Lubbock, [April? 1866], n. 4). CD recorded a contribution of £2 2s. from Rolfe in 1867 in his Down Coal and Clothing Club account book (Down House MS).
The enclosure has not been found.
