To Charles Babbage   26 May [1840]

12 Upper Gower St

May 26th.—

My dear Sir

I have called with this note to beg a favour of you. M. Sismondi, the historian & Madam Sismondi (my wife’s aunt) have just arrived in England and are coming together with Miss Allen to stay with us,1 would you, therefore, permit us to bring them to the parties, you have been kind enough to ask us to.

My sisters have left town, & therefore will be deprived of the pleasure of accepting your kind invitation to them.

With many thanks | Believe me | My dear Sir | Yours very truly | Charles Darwin

According to Emma Darwin (1915) 2: 54, CD was not well enough to receive Emma’s aunt and her husband, the Swiss historian, but the house was lent to them when the Darwins left London for Maer early in June.
