From E. A. Darwin   [before 11 October 1868]1

Friday

Dear Charles

I heard from C. P. this morning saying that he has made a ‘fearful mistake’ & that the marriage cannot be but that he can say no more about it.2

I hope to come to you next week3 | Yours affec | E D

The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from E. A. Darwin, [11 October 1868].
The reference is probably to Charles Parker, nephew of CD and Erasmus Darwin, who was then the vicar of Ford, near Shrewsbury (Crockford’s clerical directory 1886). No further information on his intended marriage has been found. Parker never married.
No record has been found of a visit by Erasmus Darwin to Down in 1868.
