From Asa Gray   14 January [1868]1

Jany. 14th.

Dear Darwin

I have some time ago read sheets of 2d vol. up to p. 416— Next sheet & title alone wanted. Have read—in snatches up to Pangenesis—but not that yet.2

Yours ever. | A. Gray

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from Asa Gray, 18 November 1867 (Correspondence vol. 15).
CD had begun sending sheets of the first volume of Variation to Gray in October 1867 (see Correspondence vol. 15, letter to Asa Gray, 16 October [1867]). Chapter 27 (Variation 2: 357–404) was headed ‘Provisional hypothesis of pangenesis’.
